About climbing Mt Tasman with a mountain guide

Situated on the Main Divide of New Zealand's Southern Alps, at the head of the Fox Glacier in Westland National Park, Mt Tasman is a sinuous and spectacular ice peak, at the top end of New Zealand's classic snow and ice climbs. Most mountaineers who attempt climbing Mt Tasman with a mountain guide are impressed by its seriousness and the climbers require excellent alpine climbing skills as well as commitment to attain the summit.

Route Description for a guide climb of Mt Tasman

A guided ascent of Mt Tasman with an Alpinism & Ski mountain guide starts in Fox Glacier township. You fly by helicopter to Pioneer hut at 2400 m altitude which is the base for the climb. The guided ascent of Mt Tasman with an Alpinism & Ski mountain guide takes you via Mt Lendenfeld and the North Shoulder route. The summit day is typically 15 - 18 hrs long.

Pre-Requisites for climbing Mt Tasman with a mountain guide

Previous experience on snow and ice and some intermediate mountaineering skills are essential for a safe ascent. A high level of fitness and stamina are necessary for a successful climb of this peak.

Guiding Qualifications

To become an internationally fully qualified alpine guide takes approximately 5-7 years of training and assessment. Kiwi guides are trained and assessed through the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association (NZMGA) which is overseen by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA).
