Situated on the Main Divide of New Zealand's Southern Alps, at the head of the Fox Glacier in Westland National Park, Mt Tasman is a sinuous and spectacular ice peak, at the top end of New Zealand's classic snow and ice climbs. Most mountaineers who attempt climbing Mt Tasman with a mountain guide are impressed by its seriousness and the climbers require excellent alpine climbing skills as well as commitment to attain the summit.

Route Description for Mt Tasman

A guided climb of Mt Tasman with an Alpinism & Ski mountain guide starts in Fox Glacier township. You fly by helicopter to Pioneer hut at 2400 m altitude which is the base for the climb. The guided ascent of Mt Tasman with an Alpinism & Ski mountain guide takes you via Mt Lendenfeld and the North Shoulder route. The summit day is typically 15 - 18 hrs long.

Depending on conditions, climbing parties either fly out from Pioneer Hut or descend the Fox glacier for 3-5 hours to Chancellor hut (1140m) and fly out from there. Each trip goes in with this contingency in mind. " Click here to see a picture of the route to climb Mt Tasman.

Pre-Requisites for climbing Mt Tasman with a mountain guide

Previous experience on snow and ice and some intermediate mountaineering skills are essential for a safe ascent. A high level of fitness and stamina are necessary for a successful climb of this peak.

Transport: Drive to Fox Glacier, fly to Pioneer hut by helicopter; fly/walk out to Fox Glacier village and drive back to Wanaka
Price Includes: Guide fees for 6 days, hut fees, high quality food, valley accommodation in Wanaka/Fox Glacier, transport Wanaka-Fox Glacier village return, party technical equipment e.g. rope, stove, fuel, etc.

Guiding Qualifications

To become an internationally fully qualified alpine guide takes approximately 5-7 years of training and assessment. Kiwi guides are trained and assessed through the New Zealand Mountain Guides Association (NZMGA) which is overseen by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (IFMGA).
